Marguerite How

Dear Joseph,

May I please take advantage of this direct access to you via your hilarious reply to that opportune Fwd. shared by Jacques. My name is Marguerite How. The first time I’ve heard you speak was at Hualien in 1981 c/o an invitation from Aunt Nanny Yiptong. So you can imagine my pleasure to be able to reconnect under another set of fortuitous circumstances and to send to you my warmest congratulations on your being nominated for the Award in promoting Chinese Culture World-Wide. ( am sure Aunt Nanny would join in the Bravos if she knew)

May I salute you for being that discreet giant who carries us on his shoulders to not only see but also be seen by the world; the Chinese diaspora as well as beyond…

Personally, your “voice” has brought me to a more profound re-reading and re-appropriation of the Chineseness fossilized in a me that is not a priori conscious of her ethnic background in everyday living. And also come to realize that the more am opened to read my make-up, the more am opened to read and appreciate the make-up of others as I learn to read their cultures too!

So simply Thank-you for putting us all on a map so we can find our way, a way to understanding…

Sincerely,
Marguerite
